Workshop 4

Workshop 4

Today we had the largest group of kids so far!

We started by preparing the ingredients for our hummus sandwiches. Cutting vegetables and toasting bread before the kids arrived.

My workshop was about vitamins and minerals and we decided to start right away with our presentation. We explained what each vitamin did and where they can find them. We asked the kids the last time they ate each vitamin and mineral explaining if their choice was actually a good source of that micronutrient. We also talked about the 5/20 rule again. I explained how when looking at nutrients on a food label one should make sure it has 5-20 grams. This is a great way to see if a food is a good source of a nutrient!

As an activity, the kids were excited when I gave them food cutouts of coupons and asked them to go “shopping”. We then identified what vitamins and minerals were present in those foods.

We had the kids choose the ingredients from a list for their sandwiches and all the kids enjoyed them! Some even took some to give to their parents.

Overall this workshop was a success. I was super excited to have such a big audience and I hope that as these kids grow up they take the effects of caffeine into consideration when choosing their beverages. I can’t wait for the next workshop!
